I see that the price of a streak freeze has now gone up to 600 gems! This seems pretty crazy to me. I am already a ForumLanguage Plus member – which costs a lot. Now they have stopped doubling the daily gems for plus members, and they size of the gem rewards is now tiny (used to be around 20 per day, now it is like 6). Does anyone else feel like ForumLanguage is becoming greedy?

Since they lunched the streak freeze I became much more active and consistent with Duolingo. Besides, missing one day every once is not a fake continuity- it is totally normal that we sometimes have days we cannot practice from many different reasons.
Another point is also the fact that you pay for Duolingo (I’m also a plus member), so you expect to get something in return without needing to pay extra after paying extra anyway.September 19, 2021gickingsquirrel567I can see you’ve been more active and consistent. You’ve reached a year! Congratulations!September 20, 2021Dcarl1In my opinion the whole idea of freezes is silly. If you want to fake continuity, buying out is as good a way as any, I suppose. September 19, 2021Jason962875Streak freezes are useful when you need to practice after midnight but Duolingo thinks you missed a day. I have only ever used them for that. So in my opinion, my streak is a true streak even though I have used them.September 22, 2021Lavande_et_rosesPlus346I see the increased Duolingo currency cost as a way to slow or halt the use of freezes. I expected this given how ridiculous the freezes and streaks have become. September 19, 2021Dcarl1Its simply a way to push those who aren’t very regular and care about the gamification features here to buy gems for $$$. September 19, 2021Indo.chine954No. It’s here because life happens, and many of us serious learners are literally unable to do a lesson every single day, even if we want. I have a pituitary tumour, fibromyalgia, and migraines that leave me in blinding pain for up to 48 hours. I literally cannot do a lesson every single day, even though I want to.
There are many reasons why serious learners can’t do a lesson each day. Life happens: your kid runs away, your basement floods, you get ill, you have a kitchen fire, your aunt dies, whatever. Stuff happens. Punishing serious learners just because life happens and they miss one single little lesson, that makes no sense. That’s why the streak freeze is here.
And, by the way, you need to realize that not everyone is so fortunate as to have acess to the internet at home. There’s a lot of folks on here from countries where home internet, or having a cell, is not the norm. They do their best to get to an internet cafe every day for their lessons, but sometimes they can’t. Or they don’t have the money for it that day. Again, no need to punish these people and take away their streak just because life happens.
Life happens. Punishing serious learnings, and discouraging them, just because they were too sick from their chemo, or unable to get to an internet cafe, or too busy dealing with a family crisis, is unfair. That’s why we have streaks.
By the way, through years and years of my illness, I’ve done my Duo as many days as I’m physically able. And I keep a notebook, where I write down each lesson. And I listen as often as possible to InnerFrench podcasts and videos. And I make my own flashcards. And I download free French magazines from my local Library. And listen to French rock bands. And I try to watch the French news sometimes. And I download free French books from my Library. And I learn about French culture, too, because understanding culture helps you to understand the language; right now I’m learning a lot about regional cooking in France. And I study English grammar, because you cannot understand the grammar structure of a 2nd language if you don’t understand grammatical terms and the structure of your own language (I have a book on this – ‘English grammar for students of French’). And, before I got sick, I took night classes in French, and lived briefly in Montreal, and travelled to France…all to help with my French. And you know what else? I use streaks. Now, tell me again how streaks are only for those who aren’t regular and only care about gamification.September 19, 2021Corinnebelle188Sorry to hear of your pain! As in the case of physical exercise, days off are an important part of training.
I can also say that as someone whose health sometimes means I can’t do a lesson, or a doctor’s appointment takes up most of my day, streak freezes are a big help. It would be very frustrating and discouraging to lose a streak for those reasons. As an avid collector (of practically anything), I don’t like losing more lingots than I can avoid, so the 10 lingot price tag is a motivator to not use a streak freeze from laziness.
As far as it not accurately reflecting a streak, we would first have to agree on what exactly we mean by a streak. If we mean how many days we’ve used Duolingo without any break whatsoever, then it would be fair to say that. If we mean how many days have we’ve consistently used Duolingo, then there is nothing wrong with a streak freeze. In learning, consistency is very important, but that doesn’t mean every day with no breaks whatsoever. Schools usually plan at least one day off per week, so it seems fair to me that people should be able to take a day off every now and then from Duolingo without having to be penalized severely.
Streak freezes are optional, so, if you personally don’t like them, don’t use them. However, please do not look down on the rest of us mere mortals who aren’t quite so perfect.September 21, 2021DoryDugalThis is a really interesting point of view. First of all, it’s wrong that you have to be interested in only gaming or only learning. Most people are interesting in both. That’s exactly why Duo is set up the way it is – because the gaming aspect enhances and engages learners. It’s not learners vs gamers, it’s learning-enhanced-by-gaming.
Second of all, saying that people who want to learn a language are not taken into consideration is wrong and makes zero sense. It’s a language-learning app. It’s entire point is for people to learn, and all your data – all everyone’s data – is tracked on Duo for the specific reason of taking every learner into consideration.September 19, 20214theAEsir425We will have to agree to disagree! Gaming certainly does not encourage me to learn more but if it helps you learn then good for you, I do agree that yes all companies want to make money but if you already pay for plus then I think you pay enough already. And I certainly don’t believe for one second that Duolingo takes every individual learner into consideration! September 19, 2021xXDarQXxwhere? spend more money where? As far as I know, duo sells the plus membership only. Is there an option to buy gems that I don’t know about?
Besides, if you really want to learn a language, you should really step back from duolingo a little, dude. I don’t think duolingo is for serious language learners. I think it’s for those of us with busy lives who can’t afford time to do research on efficient methods and textbooks or spend time immersing in native material and simply opt to trust duo to do all of that for them. All they have worry about is how many lessons they want to do in that day.
Seriously, duo wasn’t built to be as efficient as possible. It was built to be as addicting as possible. People who use duo may not learn the language as efficiently as they could but at least they don’t have to exert as much willpower if they did, which might work better for some people in the long run. They aren’t as liable to be sick of language learning and quit.
but if you your kind of intrinsic motivation and you’re not really affected by the gimmicks duo poses you’re much better off, imo, using more efficient methods such as anki and grammar textbooks, and if you’re ready, even consuming native materials.September 19, 2021Lavande_et_rosesPlus346For individuals throughout the world, it allows learning for free as long as you have access to a device and an Internet connection. That is Duolingo’s most important attribute. If you don’t have access to formalized education for any reason (financial, political, geographic, familial, societal, etc.) DL is available if you have a device and a connection.
I view the coming math learning program as crucial, too. Many of us take it for granted while others have never had significant exposure to it.
Education can change a life for the better no matter the form it takes if the learner does her/his/their best and pushes beyond the basics to continue learning.September 20, 2021Dcarl1
Is there an option to buy gems that I don’t know about?
Yes, in iOS you can buy gems for real money.September 21, 2021AkaquamanPlusHaving just started DL for Finnish, I’m enjoying the course and have gotten over 100 gems so far, but I’m going to be out in the woods for like 10 days coming up and one streak freeze won’t cover it. Is it a big deal to go back to 0 on a streak? I mean, I just would keep on going from where I left off or do they erase all your levels and make you start over again? It’s fun for me to see getting crowns, points, levels, gems, etc., but does it really matter in carrying on in the course? i like the repetition and the grammar tips and the discussions, so it looks okay to me at this point. I’m paying the Plus fee for now, but I don’t see a need to buy anything else (gems – lingots, whatever). Anyone care to enlighten me on what’s important to do here?September 21, 20214theAEsir425@Akaquaman, its really not that important if you lose your streak it will not have any effect on the course they don’t erase your levels and make you start again. When you come back after 10 days everything you have learned will still be there and your gemslingots will still be safe, the streak is just a number at the side of your name and that is all that will vanish. There is the option to log in everyday and buy a new streak freeze on a daily basis but if you were going to do that then you might might as well just do a lesson or read a story to keep your current streak alive. What’s important here is whatever makes you happy if you want to keep your streak then log in everyday and buy a freeze or do a lesson but if you don’t care about your streak and see it as just a number then go off for 10 days when you come back everything you have learned will still be here waiting for you. Good luck and happy learning :-)September 21, 2021Vonnie625687Plus476When I lost my streak, I emailed them and explained, they immediately put my streak back.September 21, 2021Ella253148638woah! i definitely wont be paying for it now. We all wanted an upgrade. And wooop dee do we got this :/
I guess Duo thinks a good upgrade means they give you less lingots, no wait, gems. Less gems and make the price higher, and make it harder to get gems. Man what an upgrade!September 21, 2021manybuddies460Can’t say I am surprised, Duolingo is a public company after all.September 19, 2021xXDarQXxthere is no option to buy gems with money so it’s not even that. it’s just sheer stupidity.September 19, 2021manybuddies460Are you sure? September 20, 2021AaronMosanI TOTALLY AGREE. I can’t remember how much but it was under 50.
Maybe duolingo ups the price if you use them a lot.
I have only used mine once or twice.September 24, 2021SherryTeachPlus737I have noticed a vast reduction in gem awards for everything. It used to be that you got gems at every 10 day continuation of a streak. 6 gems for 60 days, 7 gems for 70 days, etc. I just got to 600 days and I got. . . nothing. I’m okay with that since I am a Plus member and I don’t need the gems for anything, but still, I can see how the company is pulling back on this to push more people to buy premium.October 27, 2021EllieHanna1797YesDecember 24, 2021Rivka452578I have over 3000 gems and can’t purcase a Streak Freeze. The EQUIPPED button is grayed out. Why?January 5, 20224theAEsir425Its usually only grayed out when a streak freeze has been purchased so perhaps you already have a streak freeze equipped. January 5, 2022DoryDugalI would recommend not using the Duolingo plus, it doesn’t really change the experience too much and only takes money from you. Also, the price of streak freezes might reflect on the number of gems (lingots) you have, and on you past purchase of such items. September 19, 2021Indo.chine954No, I don’t feel at all that they’re greedy. They’re a company. Not a charity. I don’t understand why people are surprised when a company tries to make the most profit possible. Of course they do that. That’s what companies do. It’s not being greedy, it’s simply a company being a company. September 19, 2021

September 19, 2021xXDarQXxit’s a streak repair so it’s a bit more than that. you can basically lose your streak entirely and then get back and fix it again, as I understand it.September 19, 2021ChloeBruce9PlusI have it, and I had no idea that was the case.September 19, 2021Corinnebelle188Catnap is that you in the catnip?September 20, 20214theAEsir425Its just to encourage the gamers to spend more money, those of us that actually want to learn a language are not really taken into consideration! :-)September 19, 2021Indo.chine954Completely wrong.
I missed some days sick and it was recently costing 400 gems a day to streak freeze. but im not paying.September 20, 2021-Rocket_674The thing is, people used to post about the shop daily.
Because I’ve heard otherwise. I’m anticipating that they are going to sell gems for money if they hadn’t done so already.September 19, 2021Cwall180021Plus1281They are already doing that. At least on my a/b account. September 20, 2021Dcarl1In iOS you can pay real money to buy gems. Doing so would be insane…but yes, you can. September 22, 2021BoscoRJ201use the website. one streak freeze is 10 LINGOTS ONLY and legendary is there, alongside you also get 1 extra freeze per month.but the only negative thing is no mistakes inbox (they might add it soon though) September 20, 2021RasmusdaboiPlus272Just go to the website and buy your streak freezes there. It’s 20.September 20, 2021Corinnebelle188Are you in an A/B test? Does it cost that much for every plus user?September 20, 2021MichaelKie441298how do you do itSeptember 20, 2021ChastonBic1idk thats why im askingSeptember 20, 2021Bomahe418Duolingo wants to increase its value on the stock market so they need you to buy gems so they can show increased earnings while making the site worse and worse.
You don’t need to make a great product, you just need to make people pay to get rid of the horrible features you ad.September 20, 2021Amber598651of course duo is being greedySeptember 21, 2021YourLocalFujoshiThat’s a lot- As a person who uses the website, for me, it only costs 10 lingots.September 21, 2021prithvi219601there you go.. you can have my lingotSeptember 22, 2021MartinMcDo876397Plus988Yes – what is going on? It’s a rip off. September 22, 2021David17797It’s amazing how much it cost to pretend to have a streak you don’t really have.September 23, 2021HgHeT80X184they are still 5 for meSeptember 26, 2021battleguy1345Plus317I am a plus learner, and I, yes, it is very bad. September 20, 2021Paul664200I’m new to this and seems really good as can learn Spanish for free. I don’t really get this streak thing, why does it matter? Also why do gems matter? Duolingo has asked me twice now do I want to gamble five lingot for a streak and I just said no as not sure what I get if I win ? These can’t get turned into real money I’m sure? September 20, 2021AaronMosanI TOTALLY AGREE. I haven’t been able to get the traction needed to get this point across but I agree entirely.September 20, 2021ysbere13920 gems=1 lingotSeptember 21, 2021Master_TitanI only pay 10 lingots per streak freeze am I not in the big league or somethin’September 22, 2021HermioneHogWhat?! Yeah, I think so.September 23, 2021[deactivated user]They don’t cost as much for me.

JoItalian1Plus520I couldn’t agree with Jordan more.
Since they lunched the streak freeze I became much more active and consistent with Duolingo. Besides, missing one day every once is not a fake continuity- it is totally normal that we sometimes have days we cannot practice from many different reasons.
Another point is also the fact that you pay for Duolingo (I’m also a plus member), so you expect to get something in return without needing to pay extra after paying extra anyway.September 19, 2021

Dcarl1In my opinion the whole idea of freezes is silly. If you want to fake continuity, buying out is as good a way as any, I suppose. September 19, 2021

Lavande_et_rosesPlus346I see the increased Duolingo currency cost as a way to slow or halt the use of freezes. I expected this given how ridiculous the freezes and streaks have become. September 19, 2021
